Barron’s “America’s Top 100 Independent Financial Advisors,” “America’s Top 100 Financial Advisors,” and “America’s Top 1,200 Financial Advisors” base their rankings upon data provided by individual advisers and their firms, including submissions by Grimes & Company. Barron’s confirms that data via regulatory databases, crosschecks with securities firms and conversations with individual advisers.  Grimes & Company applied for consideration, and the result was independently granted.

According to Barron’s, all advisor rankings are based on hard numbers such as “the volume of assets overseen by the advisors and their teams, revenues generated for the firms and the quality of the advisors’ practices” in addition to the advisor’s “time in the business, client retention, and philanthropic work.” Moreover, Barron’s indicates that it reviews the regulatory record of each advisor it ranks. As of 2018, rankings are based on data provided by over 4,000 United States advisors. The scoring system assigns a top score of 100 and rates the rest by comparing them with the winner. A ranking of “N” denotes an advisor who is new to the list. The formula Barron’s uses to rank advisers is proprietary. It has three major components: assets managed, revenue produced and quality of practice. Investment returns are not a component of the rankings because an adviser’s returns are dictated largely by the risk tolerance of clients. The quality-of-practice component includes an evaluation of each adviser’s regulatory record.

With respect to the Barron’s “America’s Top 100 Independent Financial Advisors,” Timothy Grimes received the ranking in 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, and 2009. Kevin Grimes received the ranking in 2017.

With respect to the Barron’s “America’s Top 100 Financial Advisors,” Timothy Grimes received the ranking in 2017, 2016, and 2015.  Kevin Grimes received the ranking in 2018.

With respect to Barron’s “America’s Top 1,200 Financial Advisors Rankings by State,” Timothy Grimes received the ranking in 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, and 2011.   Kevin Grimes received the ranking in 2018.

Barron’s does not require membership or payment in order for award participants and/or applicants to be considered for an award designation. Moreover, neither Grimes & Company nor any other participating advisers paid a fee to be eligible for the “America’s Top 100 Independent Financial Advisors,” “America’s Top 100 Financial Advisors,” or “America’s Top 1,200 Financial Advisors” rankings. Barron’s does not publish, nor is Grimes & Company aware of the percentage of other advisers that received the applicable rankings.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, Barron’s-ranked advisors may pay Barron’s a separate fee for special advertising to publish a Barron’s-ranked advisor’s contact information including applicable phone numbers, email addresses, and website addresses. This publication option is offered on an annual basis and is limited to Barron’s-ranked advisors for that respective year. After receiving the respective award designations, Grimes & Company paid a separate fee to Barron’s in exchange for Barron’s publication of this information. Barron’s most recent directory listing featuring Kevin Grimes can be found at the following link: http://online.barrons.com/static_html_files/barrons/paid-advisor.pdf. In addition to this payment, Grimes & Company also paid a separate fee to Barron’s for additional reprints of the Barron’s Top 100 Independent Financial Advisors ranking and article.

While Grimes & Company paid these fees after receiving the designation, and not as a condition precedent, the fact that Grimes & Company paid any fee with respect to its receipt of the designation should be considered whether such designation is a factor in a client or prospective client’s evaluation of whether to initially engage or continue to engage Grimes & Company for investment advisory services.  It should be noted that this type of payment creates an inherent conflict of interest because it provides the awarding entity with a monetary incentive to grant such ranking, recognition, or designation to participating Advisors that submit such forms of consideration. To mitigate that conflict of interest Grimes & Company reminds current and prospective clients that these ratings, rankings, and designations should not be construed as an endorsement of Grimes & Company by any client, and that they are no guarantee of future investment success.

Grimes & Company is unaware of any undisclosed facts that could potentially invalidate the appropriateness of the ranking. By virtue of disclosing this ranking, Grimes & Company is disclosing favorable ratings (to the extent that Grimes & Company is ranked above other advisors) and unfavorable ratings (to the extent that Grimes & Company is ranked below other advisors).  The rankings may not be representative of any one client’s experience because of the way in which it is calculated. The rankings are independently granted. Inclusion on the Barron’s Lists is absolutely not indicative of Grimes & Company’s future performance, or any future performance pertaining to its clients’ investments; should not be construed by a client or prospective client as a guarantee that they will experience a certain level of results if Grimes & Company is engaged, or continues to be engaged, to provide investment advisory services; and should not be construed as a current or past endorsement of Grimes & Company by any of its clients.

2. Financial Times – Top 300 RIA Firm, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018
Source: Financial Times (June 26, 2014; June 18, 2015; June 16, 2016; June 22, 2017; June 28, 2018)

“FT” and “Financial Times” are trademarks of The Financial Times Ltd. (“FT”). The Financial Times “300 Top Registered Investment Advisers” is an independent listing (“The FT 300”) produced annually. FT is not affiliated with Grimes & Company. The FT 300 is presented as “an elite group,” not a competitive ranking of one to 300.

The results are not based upon information or opinions of participating Registered Investment Advisers’ (“RIA's”) clients. Therefore, inclusion on The FT 300 is not representative of any participating RIA’s clients' experiences. Neither the participating RIAs nor their employees pay a fee to The Financial Times in exchange for inclusion in The FT 300.  Grimes & Company was published on The FT 300 in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018.  Grimes & Company applied for consideration, and the result was independently granted.

As of 2018, applicants are graded on six factors: assets under management (“AUM”); AUM growth rate; years in existence; advanced industry credentials of the firm’s advisers; online accessibility; and compliance records. By considering the “compliance record” eligibility to appear on The FT 300, FT seeks to ensure that a participating RIA has an established and significant history and record free from regulatory sanctions. The FT caps the number of companies from any one state. The cap is roughly based on the distribution of millionaires across the United States.  The FT 300 is based on data gathered from RIAs, regulatory disclosures, FT’s research, and/or research conducted on FT’s behalf by “Ignites Distribution Research,” formerly referred to as a “sister publication” and most recently referred to as a “subsidiary” of FT that provides business intelligence on the asset management industry.  Grimes & Company is not aware of the number of RIAs that applied to be on The FT 300 for all the years in which it appeared. However in 2017, approximately 725 RIA companies applied for consideration. As of 2018: the FT 300 represents RIAs with an “average” practice experience of over 22 years and managing $4 billion in assets; and the FT 300 Top RIAs hail from 38 states and Washington, D.C. FT indicates that the methodology used to evaluate inclusion on The FT 300 is quantifiable and objective, and that the participating RIAs had no subjective input in the analysis. FT does not include RIAs on The FT 300 if the ratings are not statistically valid with respect to any RIA; and there are no facts that would call into question the validity of the inclusion on The FT 300 or the appropriateness of Grimes & Company’s advertising the same. Neither the participating RIAs nor their employees pay a fee to FT in exchange for inclusion in The FT 300.  However, Grimes & Company may pay a fee to FT, an affiliate, or an unaffiliated third party in exchange for plaques or article reprints commemorating the designation. While Grimes & Company would pay this fee after receiving the designation and not as a condition precedent to receiving it, the fact that Grimes & Company pays any fee with respect to its receipt of the designation should be considered if such designation is a factor in a client or prospective client’s evaluation of whether to initially engage or continue to engage Grimes & Company for investment advisory services. Inclusion on The FT 300 is not indicative of Grimes & Company’s future performance, or any future performance pertaining to its clients’ investments; should not be construed by a client or prospective client as a guarantee that they will experience a certain level of results if Grimes & Company is engaged, or continues to be engaged to provide investment advisory services; and should not be construed as a current or past endorsement of Grimes & Company by any of its clients.

3. Financial Advisor Magazine – RIA Survey & Ranking, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018
Source: Financial Advisor Magazine (July 2018;July 2017; July 2016; July 2015; July 2014; July 2013; July 2012)

The Financial Advisor Magazine is a monthly news publication that delivers market information and strategies to help advisors better serve their affluent clients, as well as practice management ideas to help advisors build their firms. Grimes & Company is not affiliated with Financial Advisor Magazine.

Candidates for Financial Advisor Magazine’s RIA Survey and Ranking must complete an online survey that contains approximately twenty-six (26) to thirty (30) questions (number of questions may vary year to year) concerning the candidate firm’s clients, Registered Investment Adviser ("RIA") size, RIA age, services, and growth efforts. With respect to the candidate’s clients, the questionnaire contains inquiries concerning the firm’s total number of clients and demographics. The questionnaire also inquires as to the candidate’s total assets under management, additional assets, and techniques employed by the candidate firm that promoted or hindered growth to the candidate’s asset base. The questionnaire also contains inquiries concerning the candidate’s registration status as an investment adviser and/or broker-dealer, identification of the candidate’s custodians, and the date of firm’s most recent ADV filing. The questionnaire further asks candidates to check-off all services the candidate currently offers its clients. With respect to the candidate’s employees, the questionnaire inquires as to the firm’s total number of employees and the firm’s employee recruitment practices over the preceding three years to completing the survey. With regards to the firm’s growth efforts, the questionnaire inquires as to the candidate’s likelihood of expansion efforts in the three (3) years preceding completion of the survey and in the forthcoming twelve (12) months from the date the candidate completing the survey. Some of these inquiries include whether the firm hired a strategy consultant, obtained a valuation appraisal, added one or more offices, engaged in merger discussions, rejected a merger proposal, or hired former registered representatives. The questionnaire also asks candidate to reveal one thing that the candidate would do to improve the advisory profession.

The criteria on which the final ranking is presented ranks candidates based on five (5) categories: 1) year-end discretionary and non-discretionary assets under management (“AUM”) reported on the candidate’s Form ADV; 2) the candidate’s percentage of growth in assets for the relevant calendar year; 3) average assets per client relationship; 4) percentage of growth in assets per client; 5) candidate’s percent change in number of client relationships.

To be eligible for the ranking, firms must be registered investment advisors and provide financial planning and related services to individual clients. Firms must have filed their Form ADV prior to completing the questionnaire associated with the award. Corporate RIA firms and investment advisor representatives (“IARs”) are not eligible for this survey.  From year to year, firms with a certain minimum of  assets under management are recognized in the print version of Financial Advisor's Magazine's ranking list. Firms with less than the respective year's prescribed minimum of assets under management are recognized in the Financial Advisor's Magazine national online digital ranking list on FA’s website, https://www.fa-mag.com/.  Grimes & Company was recognized for the award in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. Financial Advisor Magazine awarded the following number of recipients for each respective year: 2012: 513 honorees; 2013: 522 honorees; 2014: 529 honorees; 2015: 562 honorees; 2016: 610 honorees; 2017: 638 honorees; 2018: 707 honorees. Grimes & Company applied for consideration, and the result was independently granted.

Financial Advisor Magazine does not require membership or payment in order for award participants and/or applicants to be considered for an award designation. Financial Advisor Magazine does not publish, nor is Grimes & Company aware of the number of participants that applied to be on “RIA Survey & Ranking” for the year(s) upon which it appeared.

The award designation may not be representative of any one client’s experience because of the way in which it is calculated. The award designation is absolutely not indicative of Grimes & Company’s and its advisors’ future performance, or any future performance pertaining to its clients’ investments. The award designation should not be construed by a client or prospective client as a guarantee that they will experience a certain level of results if Grimes & Company is engaged, or continues to be engaged, to provide investment advisory services; and should not be construed as a current or past endorsement of Grimes & Company by any of its clients. This ranking or any other rankings and/or recognition by unaffiliated rating services and/or publications should not be construed as a guarantee that a client will experience a certain level of results or satisfaction if Grimes & Company is engaged, nor should it be construed as a current or past endorsement by any of its clients.

4. Forbes – America's Top Wealth Advisors, 2016
Source: Forbes (August 3, 2016)

“Forbes” is a registered mark of Forbes LLC.

The Forbes ranking of “America’s Top Wealth Advisors,” developed by SHOOK Research, is based on an algorithm of qualitative criteria, mostly gained through telephone and in-person due diligence interviews, and quantitative data. Those advisors that are considered have a minimum of seven (7) years’ experience, and the algorithm weights factors like revenue trends, assets under management, compliance records, industry experience and those that encompass best practices in their practices and approach to working with clients. Portfolio performance is not a criterion due to varying client objectives and lack of audited data.

Neither Forbes nor SHOOK receive a fee or require membership in exchange for rankings. Accordingly, neither Grimes & Company nor any other participating advisors paid a fee to be eligible for the “America's Top Wealth Advisors” ranking.

In developing its applicant pool, SHOOK implements thresholds to limit nominations for consideration. As of August 3, 2016, Forbes and SHOOK received 13,174 nominations (based on SHOOK thresholds), invited 4,000 candidates to complete the online survey, conducted 3,980 telephone interviews, and conducted 716 in-person interviews at the Advisor’s location. Forbes recognized 200 wealth advisors during the year that Timothy Grimes received the award.

The ranking may not be representative of any one client’s experience because of the way in which it is calculated. The ranking is independently granted. The ranking is absolutely not indicative of Grimes & Company’s and its advisors’ future performance, or any future performance pertaining to its clients’ investments. This ranking or any other rankings and/or recognition by unaffiliated rating services and/or publications should not be construed as a guarantee that a client will experience a certain level of results or satisfaction if Grimes & Company is engaged, nor should it be construed as a current or past endorsement by any of its clients.

5. Forbes/RIA Channel 2016 100 Fastest Growing RIA Firms Over Ten Years
Source: Forbes (November 14, 2016)

Forbes and RIA Channel sponsor the Forbes/RIA Channel “100 Fastest Growing RIA Firms.”  Forbes is a registered mark of Forbes LLC. RIA Database has been producing the RIA lists for Forbes since 2006. The RIA Channel is an affiliate of RIA Database, an independently owned and operated data company that collects and profiles financial advisory firms. RIA Database maintains profiles on over one million financial advisors across all intermediary channels: registered investment advisors, investment advisor representatives, registered representatives of broker/dealers, family office advisors, bank, trust, and independent brokers.  RIA Database was founded in 2005 and tracks historical investment and asset information on all registered investment advisors (RIAs). The RIA Channel and RIA Database are registered trademarks owned by Labworks, LLC. Grimes & Company is not affiliated with Forbes, the RIA Channel or RIA Database. Neither Forbes, the RIA Channel, nor RIA Database endorses Grimes & Company or any of its representatives.

The 2016 Forbes and the RIA Channel “100 Fastest Growing RIA Firms Over Ten Years” recognized registered investment advisers (“RIAs”) based on their growth in assets over the preceding ten years with a majority of the firm nominees accruing more than $1 billion in assets. The nominees were considered leading firms because of their independence, client commitment and their ability to grow through a decade of market challenges and rewards. To be considered for the ranking, each firm must be a registered investment advisor (RIA) with the SEC, provide wealth management services and serve individual clients as a primary focus.

The 2016 Forbes and RIA Channel “100 Fastest Growing RIA Firms over Ten Years” specifically identifies wealth managers, and ranks them by asset growth over prior ten years ending September 30, 2016.  If an RIA was not registered as an RIA each of the past ten years, it was not included in this ranking. Additionally, firms were excluded if they had violations: civil, criminal or regulatory. For the 2016 ranking, assets were based on assets under management as reported on each firm’s Form ADV Part I. Further qualification, defined by RIA Channel, required that each RIA advised clients on comprehensive wealth management services including manager due diligence, manager selection, asset allocation, portfolio construction, portfolio management for individuals, and ongoing supervisory management of client assets. Fund companies, hedge funds, broker/dealers, registered representatives, and banks were excluded from consideration.

As the RIA market changes and grows, RIA Channel continues to adapt its criteria to the current environment. Accordingly, each year may result in a ranking list awarded based on slightly different criteria.

In 2016, Forbes and the RIA Channel recognized 100 RIAs. Grimes & Company was recognized for the award in 2016. Grimes & Company applied for consideration, and the result was independently granted.

Forbes and the RIA Channel does not require membership or payment in order for award participants and/or applicants to be considered for an award designation. Forbes and the RIA Channel does not publish, nor is Grimes & Company aware of the number of participants that applied to be on “100 Fastest Growing RIA Firms Over Ten Years” for the year(s) upon which it appeared. Grimes & Company is unaware of any undisclosed facts that could potentially invalidate the appropriateness of the ranking.
